'Night' Essay

Describe at least one important technique used in the text.
Explain how the technique created an emotional response in you.

The book I'm going to be talking about is a true book called Night by Elie Wiesel. The techniques he used in this book that I picked up were first person narration, dialogue, repetition, and negative construction. These techniques had an emotional impact on me, making me feel sad, dejected and terrible. Elie Wiesel's autobiography made me think about how those people died and it wasn't their fault for being their religion. Also, why would the Nazis do that to people that haven't done anything wrong?

One part of the story which affected me was the part where Elie's family was split up. The technique Elie used was first person narration, using the personal pronouns 'I' and 'my''. This shows the event from Elie's point of view as it actually happened to him. "Tzipora was holding mother's hand. I saw them walking farther and farther away; mother was stroking my sister's blond hair, as if to protect her. And I walked on with my father, with the men. I didn't know that this was the moment in time and the place where I was leaving my mother and Tzipora forever. I kept walking, my father holding my hand." This part of the memoir made me feel very crushed because they had to leave their family. Then he knew his family died before him and his father, they got told that a while before his father died.

Another part which affected me was just before the selection when no one believed the inmate who told them about the gas chambers. The techniques Elie Wiesel used were dialogue and repetition. Elie records the words the inmate said to them, repeating the words 'over there'. This shows us that he is trying to let them know that they might be going to die, but they are not believing him. However, they soon found out they should have believed him, "We didn't know. Nobody had told us. He couldn't believe his ears. His tone became even harsher, 'Over there. Do you see the chimney over there? Do you see it?' " I felt that it was sad that they didn't know about the gas chambers. Luckily, they didn't go into the gas chambers, but sadly so many more did.

Another part that affected me was at the end of the book when his father died. They didn't have any type of funeral for his family or his cousins. The technique he used was a negative construction of the first two sentences, "No..." emphasising that nothing happened like a normal death. The final sentence starts with a positive phrase and ends with a negative phrase which shows us that he feels bad that he didn't respond to his dad. "No prayers were said over his tomb. No candle lit in his memory. His last word had been my name. He had called out to me and I had not answered." I feel bad for him because he couldn't talk to his father again after that night because they took him away before he woke up.

World War II was a really bad time for Jewish people because most of them got transported to a concentration camp for something that they couldn't control. Some of the people made it out alive. But a large portion of the Jewish population in Europe died. 89,846 thousand Jewish people were living in Europe when World War II was in progress.

Studying 'Night' by Elie Wiesel

Empathy Map 2 - Elie aged 16, at the end of the war

We completed a second Empathy Map looking at what Elie was like at the end of the war. Elie was a Jew who was locked up in world war 2. He was in world war 2 locked up in Poland for 4 years before he was let out by them when the United States Of America was coming close to the camp site. He was with his dad when he died but the rest of his family left them because they were hiding in a bunker before they had to get onto the rain way trains where they took them to Auschwitz. It was sad when he had to leave his family behind to stay alive even though he knew all of his family was already dead. It was nice to know that he still believed in the god after the war that he was raised up to believe. We aren't all the same but we can all be kind to one another. The most important thing about the book is that you have to be kind to people if they're going through tough times.

superhero story

“MAYDAY MAYDAY!! There is a out brake at sector four “over”. Push the troops through sector two and then through three to catch them down “over”.

They are playing there hand fast so don’t muck around or we are going to loose them to the virus “over”!

The victims names are Joe and Sam Walder and there not slowing down! ”over”.

I see them there in sector seven “CATCH THEM!” “over”

Me and the troops just went through sector seven? ”over” Are you shore that they just went through sector seven? ”over”.

positive, They went through sector seven, I sore them ”over”. Then they most have snuck past one of us, Because we have no track of where they went “over”

WHY ARE THEY SO GOOD AT THIS! “Over”

They have been doing this for years, They were in the army from 1963 to 2007, They know how to hide.”over”

“There on third flour” “over”.

How did they get up two levels in the building and how do you know there their?

I’ve got a surveillance officer on fourth flour one flour up from Joe and Sam Walder who are going for the virus,

Evacuate the building i repeat evacuate the building.

They have got the virus ”over”.

HOW!!! The virus is on the tenth flour, They were just on the third flour! ”over”.

All the cameras just cut off ”over”.

How? ”over”

They went in the power supply room and cut all the alarms off except for the evacuation alarm. “over”

Can we tern them back on? “over”

Negative, The only way to tern it back on is to go into the room that they turned it off in but it is too high of a risk to do that at this moment of time. “over”

Ok, So what are we going to do? “over”

We have to weight it out until they come out. “over”

I don't think they are going to come out for A while, And what are we going to do about the workers on floor four? “over”

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh.

Scream’s flooding from were the workers are.

I think they are infecting the people on floor four. “over”

Were’s the scientist who made the virus.”over”

He lives in New Zealand, His name is Dr Fraser. “over”

How are we supposed to get him to fix it if he is on the other side of the planet.”over”

We will have to fly him out to here but it will take two days for him to get here so we need to keep it in the building until he gets here.”over”

That will be a hard two days but we need to do it.”over”

Should we get our troops up there and try to get them? “over”

Negative, We can’t risk it we might spreed it even more. “over”

Whats the chance of them coming out of the building? “over”

Probably around forty to fifty percent so very high, so we have to keep our eyes open twenty four seven so don’t get tired. “over”

How do we know that they are still up there they might have got right past us. “over”

They are up there, Because we have no trace of them coming out yet so we are sure there still up there. “over”

But we wont know until Dr Fraser gets here. “over”

Someone up there have smashed glass on floor four. “over”

How can they still be alive? “over”

They probably have turned into mutants because they have gone into they lab with all experiments that they have made over the past forty three years! “over”

Someone’s jumped out of the building! “over”

Tell the troops to get ready for fire. “over”

There just lying there on the ground, I think there dead. “over”

FIRE FIRE FIRE! THERE MOVING!...
